Overview
Rats are
present in almost every house if precautionary measure are not taken. They
spoil our grain stores. They may chew electrical cables, wood or our clothes
which is insane. Rats also share a long history with plagues all over the world
in past centuries. Because they are carrier of a lot of diseases. That’s why
everyone try to get rid of rats.
All that rats wants are food, water, and shelter. So they try to live in our basements and attics where these are easily available. Following are methods to permanently get rid of these rodents:

Ø Inspect the house and seal all the portals of entry.
Search all the house to find colonies of rats. Look for the places where they breed. When you have knowledge about their locations now you know where to take action. One more thing you are supposed to do is to seal all the points from where rats are getting into your house.

Ø Use oil of mint plant.
Peppermint oil has very pungent smell. Rats have awful sense of smell and they hate peppermint smell very much. If you spray any area with respective oil then rats will that area. It is not fatal for them but repellent. Many commercial companies use mint extract in their products to treat rats.

Ø Use ammonia to get rid of rats.
As discussed above rats have a very strong sense of smell that helps them find food and detect danger. Ammonia is a gas and it also has a repellent odor for pests. So, it keeps rat away. Moreover, ammonia also damages the respiratory tract of rats and causes a serious problems to their windpipe. That is the reason rats avoid ammonia.

Ø Use of dry ice is also a good option.
Rats also need oxygen to breathe. One way to get rid of rats is to vanish oxygen or to increase carbon dioxide. This can be done by putting dry ice in the holes of rats. Soon that solid ice will start producing carbon dioxide and it will suffocate rats. There will be no option for rats expects getting out of their place.

ØOnion, garlic and potatoes also keep rats away.
Onion and garlic if eaten by rats make them sick slowly. So it can be used to get rid of rats. Rats will not eat onion or garlic eagerly and find a way to mix them into their favorite food, like cheese. Instant potatoes are also very dangerous for rats. When rat feed on instant potatoes it can be proved fatal for them. It is because potatoes expand in size when getting into the belly and mix with water. Rats cannot vomit nor can get it out. So above mentioned items can be used to get rid of rats.

Ø Don’t let them get food.
If you don’t let them get the food they may starve to death. Make sure that they are not getting their hands on any food supplies or water.

Ø Use baits and traps to catch them.
· Cage trap: It is a trap made up of metal. A bait is used to lure the rats into the cage.

· Glue trap: As name mentioning glue is used to make that trap. Take a tray fill it with glue and put some corn powder on it or some other attractive food. When rats come to get food they will stick to tray through glue.

· Electric trap: It is similar to cage trap but have electrical settings in it. When rats enter the cage they get a heavy electrical shock and rats die at the spot. It is most demanding trap nowadays.
